The Pukeko (or Purple Swamp Hen) is a native New Zealand bird. Their distinctive bright blue plumage and red beaks ensure these quirky characters always stand out from the green landscape. On this Gumboot the Pukeko stalk amongst New Zealand native flax and cabbage trees. New Zealand flax produces long leaf fibres that have played an important role in the culture, history, and economy of New Zealand. Maori have used the leaves to make such things as baskets, mats and fishing nets.
